Deine Karriere bei Carl von Ossietzky Universität Oldenburg

A PhD student position (salary level E-13 TV-L, for 3 years, m/f/d), to be filled from July 1st 2021, is open in the Junior Research Group led by Dr. Dmitry Momotenko at the Chemistry Department at Carl von Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Germany within the framework of an ERC Grant Nanoscale 3D Printing of a Lithium Ion Battery: Rethinking the Fabrication Concept for a Revolution in Energy Storage.

We are looking for highly motivated individuals to establish a new team working on advanced nanoscale 3D printing technology for fabrication of batteries with revolutionary performance. Our goal is to make a breakthrough in major battery characteristics (charging time and power) by a paradigm shift in battery engineering: we plan to develop and employ advanced nanoscale 3D printing techniques to fabricate active battery materials with ultrasmall structural features, which will provide a hundred-to-thousand-fold increase in the surface area of the battery enabled by nanoscale spacing between electrodes without compromising the battery capacity. To reach this, high-aspect ratio features should be additively manufactured to form active materials of the cathode and the anode. This will enable unprecedented level of control of the battery architecture, allowing groundbreaking improvement of the key battery performance characteristics, including higher output power and charging times of only several seconds. We are establishing a unique engineering approach with a potential to completely change the future landscape in research and industry related to portable electronic devices and electric vehicles and will also benefit many technologies beyond battery research, where nanoscale 3D printing opens new unparalleled capacity.

Your tasks:
  • developing new technology for nanoscale 3D printing;
  • programming the operation of the printer (e.g. in LabView);
  • development of printing process for new materials;
  • micro- and macroscale materials characterization, including electron microscopy, crystallography, electrical, micromechanical and electrochemical properties;
  • extensive data analysis;
  • microfabrication;
  • device testing;

Essential requirements:
  • MSc (or equivalent qualification, e.g. Diploma) in Chemistry, Physics, Materials science or related disciplines;
  • good communication skills, high level of spoken and written English.

Desirable:
  • practical and theoretical experience in the areas listed above in the “Tasks” section;
  • ability to work independently as well as in a team;
  • creativity, problem-solving skills, ability to learn fast.
