Topic: Are there positive associative effects in methane emission, digestion and health of dairy cattle?

Project
This project searches for positive associative effects in dairy cattle receiving diets composed of feeds with high nutritional value and methane suppressing properties. Such effects would consist in declining enteric methane formation with no or only small side-effects on digestion, health and performance. Positive associate effects have been demonstrated to some extent in vitro, but in vivo confirmation of such effects is scarce, or even lacking. In essence, this project is expected to pinpoint a successful nutritional strategy for methane mitigation with a likely widespread adoption and implementation in order to reduce the environmental impact of livestock agriculture. The project is funded by an ETH Zurich Research Grant, a program which promotes ’highly creative and original approaches with potential for exciting new discoveries’.

Requirements
We are seeking a motivated, team-oriented candidate with a strong interest in the interface of basic and applied sciences. Applicants should hold a master level degree in agricultural science, biology, veterinary medicine or related disciplines. Affinity for animal experiments and laboratory work is essential, in particular in vivo metabolism trials, in vitro rumen simulation techniques and eukaryotic cell culture. Writing of scientific papers requires good knowledge of the English language.

Offers
We offer an exciting project in a highly motivated research group which is equipped with excellent experimental and laboratory facilities. Supervision will be close, but allows independent work. Scientific writing and participation in scientific conferences is very much supported. The doctoral position allows living in the scenic city of Zurich and comes with a salary allowing a decent living.
