At the University of Kassel - Faculty of Organic Agricultural Sciences,Group Animal Husbandry in the Tropics and Subtropics (Prof. Dr. Eva Schlecht) - Provided final approval - Start of appointment: April 1st, 2015
PhD position (13 TV-H)
Part-time (50 % of full-time position) within the research project „In situ assessment of GHS emissions from two livestock systems in East Africa – determinig current status and quantifying mitigation options“. Initially for three years (§ 2 Abs. 2 WissZeitVG). Possibility to do a PhD is provided.
The research project aims at the quantification of greenhouse gas emissions from enteric fermentation and animal excreta from dairy and beef cattle under prevailing production situations in East Africa, to improve IPCC model data and to more accurately assess emission intensities in major African ruminant production systems. To achieve the overall goal, current feed types and feeding levels will be identified and on station feeding and respiratory trials will be conducted to measure GHG emissions arising from these. In addition, nutritional intervention options that aim at improving cattle productivity by strategic supplementation of typical diets will be tested for their effectiveness in terms of production enhancement and reduction of GHG emissions.
Tasks of the PhD student: The above research is conducted by an interdisciplinary team of international scientists from different affiliations and locations across Africa, Europe and Asia. Focus of the PhD student will be on livestock nutrition, particularly feed intake and digestion, digesta passage, nitrogen metabolism and carbon cycling. To this end, the candidate will quantify nutrient intake as well as milk yields or live weight changes of differently fed dairy or beef cattle along with their excretion of urine and feces and the proximate composition of the excreta.
Field research will be conducted at the ILRI experimental farm in Nairobi, Kenya. Therefore, yearly stays of up to 10 months in Nairobi will be required during the first 2 of the 3 years. Place of service is the University of Kassel at Witzenhausen campus.
Profile of the candidate: University diploma/master's degree in agricultural, veterinary or animal sciences, with a clear focus on animal nutrition; the respective degree should have been obtained within the past 5 years. The candidate should have an interest and, preferably, experience in animal husbandry in the tropics and subtropics. We expect creativity in problem solving, integrative skills, team spirit and scientific enthusiasm. Further requirements include the ability to work independently under potentially difficult field conditions, and very good oral and written English skills.

The University of Kassel is an equal opportunity employer and aims at a clear increase of the proportion of women in research and teaching. Qualified women are therefore expressly requested to apply. Under the precondition of equal qualification, disabled persons will be preferred.
