The research group ‘Crop Biodiversity and Breeding Informatics’ at the Institute of Plant Breeding, Seed Science and Population Genetics has an open position (65%) of a research associate (Ph. D. student) for three years starting from 1. 8. 2015.

The position is part of a collaborative research project aimed at integrating genomic, phenotypic and other data to identify useful plant genetic resources for plant breeding with funding from the German Ministry of Agriculture. The position involves the following tasks:
  • Contribute to the development of a database to store a diversity of data types
  • Assemble public and project-related data in the database
  • Implement existing and new approaches to identify useful genetic resources based on different data using population or quantitative genetic methods
  • Coordinate genotyping and phenotyping activities with project partners
The project will mainy use data generated in a collaborative project to breed soybean varieties for cultivation in Central Europe although our goal is to develop a generic and broadly applicable approach to the identification of potentially useful plant genetic resources for breeding programs and their contribution to food security.

We expect that applicants have a Master-level degree in population or quantitative genetics, plant or animal breeding, bioinformatics or statistics, and a strong interest in the analysis of large data sets. The position requires practical experience in a programming or data analysis language (e.g., Python, R) as well as a good background in statistics. The collaborative character of the project requires self-organization as well as the ability to communicate and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team. We expect that candidates are genuinely interested in the research topic and strongly motivated to learn new methods and tools in order to master scientific challenges.

The University of Hohenheim has a critical mass of well-connected research groups in plant and animal breeding, which offers very good opportunities for interaction and further training. The university is located on a beautiful campus in the South German city of Stuttgart with a vibrant cultural life and a nice surrounding. The position is available from 1. 8. 2015 and is funded for three years according to the E13 TV-L government salary scale (65% part-time). Registration for the Ph.D. program of the Faculty of Agriculture to obtain a Ph.D. degree is expected. The University of Hohenheim is an equal opportunity employer. Women and members of minority groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

For further information about our research group and the project visit or contact Prof. Dr. Karl Schmid (Email:, Tel.: +49 711 45923487)

Application deadline: 26 June 2015
