The Leibniz-Institute of Vegetable and Ornamental Crops (IGZ) aims for excellence in horticultural research and related plant and environmental sciences. The IGZ has sites in Großbeeren (close to Berlin) and Erfurt, and is a member of the Leibniz Association (WGL). IGZ conducts strategic research for sustainable production of vegetables and ornamentals, contributing to healthy nutrition, human well-being and the conservation of natural resources.
 
Our institute is interested to contribute to urban horticulture initiatives and community garden movements. We aim to understand the relationship between plants and the urban environment. We would like to support urban agricultural systems that respect and maintain diversity and offer sustainable solutions in urban situations. Our research will help to close nutrient cycles in cities and between urban and rural areas, and to link matter and energy flows at the micro level.
 
We are looking for a
Research scientist
Reference number: 04/2015/PE
 
(wage group TV-L, salary domain Ost, EG 13, 65% of the regular working time)
 
to work in a project on
 
Nutrient cycles - good substrates for urban horticulture
 
Employment will be initially for two years. If the project is successful, an extension of one more year is possible. There is a possibility to link this project with a Ph D study at the Life Science Faculty, Humboldt University Berlin.
 
The successful candidate will
  • interact with urban horticulture initiatives and community gardens to define problems of substrates available to them
  • make suggestions for substrate improvements
  • cooperate with other initiatives and with companies to define technical solutions for improved composting processes
  • carry out experiments with existing and improved substrates
  • compare local and international experience in substrate use in urban horticulture
  • assess the sustainability of biochar use in composting in urban environments
  • investigate the potential of the safe use human faeces in urban nutrient cycles
 
We expect
  • a Master degree in an horticultural, agricultural, ecological, technical or biological discipline, with a focus on nutrient or matter management, nutrient cycles and sustainable solutions
  • an excellent academic record
  • knowledge on urban horticultural initiatives and systems
  • excellent English communication skills
