IPK Gatersleben is one of the leading international Research Institutes in the area of cereal genomics, breeding research, and crop development and performance. It is a recognized center of crop plant research addressing problems of modern biology. Our scientific expertise integrates disciplines to elucidate the mechanisms underlying plant development, metabolism, and interactions with the environment. Our research aims at the generation of fundamental knowledge and the development of genetic and biotechnological tools to spur the knowledge-based use of plant-genetic resources to optimize a variety of crop traits. Frequently, this involves co-operation with various national and international universities as well as public-private partnerships.

For the working group of Molecular Plant Nutrition we are looking for a

PhD student

Employment starting up as soon as possible and is limited for 36 months.

Research in our group is focused on the transport and sensing of nutrients, on genotypic factors determining nutrient efficiency in plants, and stress adaptations of primary metabolism. We combine molecular and metabolic approaches to investigate morphological and physiological responses of plants to abiotic stress situations and aim at identifying key processes and underlying genes crucial for nutrient acquisition and the maintenance of metabolism.

Your tasks:
The aim of this project is to identify how ammonium and nitrate transport processes contribute to nitrogen use efficiency in different wheat lines. A major goal is to work out how wheat breeding has influenced nitrogen use efficiency traits. This work includes in-silico approaches for allele mining, use of stable isotopes to determine nitrogen uptake capacities by roots, analysis of root system architecture, and gene expression analyses. In addition, heterologous growth complementation in yeast and transgenic approaches will be included to describe the biochemical and physiological properties of isolated transporters. The project will be part of a large cooperation with other groups at the IPK and with plant breeders.

Your qualification:
You have master’s degree or a diploma in biology, biotechnology, agricultural sciences or a related discipline. Additionally you already have working experience in molecular biological techniques and a background in physiology. A strong ability for teamwork is prerequisite, as well as, fluent English communication skills. Besides, an interest in the combination of basic and applied research is requested.

If you need further information feel free to contact Prof. Dr. Nicolaus von Wirén. You reach him under vonwiren@ipk-gatersleben.de or phone +49 (0) 39482 5602.
