Working group Prof. John Barker, Frankfurt Initiative for Regenerative Medicine, at JW Goethe University, in Frankfurt looking for a motivated bachelor student for the project:

"Combining Tissue Engineering and Electrical Stimulation to develop better treatments for non-healing bone fractures"
 
Background:  Complex non-healing bone fractures are a major challenge for patients who suffer with them and the Physicians who treat them.  
Tissue engineering approaches that deliver 3D scaffolds, stem cells and growth factors directly into affected bone defects hold great potential for successfully treating these fractures. However, these tissue engineering treatments have yet to gain widespread clinical use.
Electrical stimulation has been successfully used to treat bone defects clinically for more than 30 years. While the mechanisms by which electrical stimulation promotes bone healing is still poorly understood, we now know that it plays a key role in signaling cellular pathways involved in healing.
 
Project: In this project we will combine tissue engineering and electrical stimulation approaches in in-vivo and in-vitro experiments to determine the effectiveness and the underlying mechanisms of this combined approach, with the ultimate goal of developing new and better treatments for patients suffering with these debilitating disorders.
 
Techniques used in this project: Stem cell culture (2D and 3D); in vitro electrical stimulation; cell morphology/differentiation/migration/viability assays; gene expression analysis, qRT-PCR, western-blot; histology, ICC, IHC; as well as basics of light and fluorescent-microscopy and bioinformatics.
 
We are looking for: A motivated student with study focus in Bioengineering, Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry or similar. Proficiency in English is necessary.
