The GRK1739 “Molecular determinants of the cellular radiation response and their potential for response modulation” offers outstanding interdisciplinary scientific training and research opportunities for graduates of life sciences and medicine with interest in basic and translational research. Although DNA is the critical target for the lethal effects of ionizing radiation, there is increasing evidence that interactions with signals from the microenvironment, e.g., growth factors, nutrients, extracellular matrix proteins, and stromal cells crucially affect radiation sensitivity. In our research we aim to advance the dissection of the role of novel players in the cellular responses to ionizing radiation. These players include the membrane protein Caveolin 1 (Project of PD D. Klein). The project focuses on the interaction of Cav1 with DNA damage-induced signaling networks and cell-fate decisions. We will analyze differences in the impact of this molecule on the response of tumor and normal tissues to ionizing radiation, and explore the biological consequences of combining ionizing radiation with molecularly targeted drugs in clinically relevant in vitro and in vivo models. These studies will generate a molecular basis for the future therapeutic exploitation of tumor-microenvironment interactions to modulate the radiation response.

Applicants should hold a Master Degree or equivalent in e.g. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Biophysics, or Cell Biology. Candidates are selected on the basis of excellent performance in their studies and their motivation. The position will start in October 2016 and is funded for three years.
