The position is available for 1 year (potentially extentable) from July 1st, 2016 at the Institute for Physiological Chemistry and Pathobiochemistry of the University of Münster, Germany.

We expect a motivated person with skills in protein chemistry, molecular biology and cell biology. The candidate should be willing to learn new methods and technologies. The project focuses on the interaction of several carcinoma cell lines with platelets at the molecular and cellular level. Novel snake venom components will be isolated from different South American snake species in cooperation with Brazilian cooperation research groups. These proteins will be characterized for their potential to inhibit α2β1 integrin or/and GPIb. Their interaction with platelets and their inhibition of tumor cell-induced platelet activitation will be studied. Isolation of platelets from blood samples as well as aggregometry and flow cytometry are important methods in this project. Further, established methods of cell biology (e.g. flow chamber assays, impedance-based adhesion and migration tests), molecular biology (e.g. siRNA transfection), and protein chemistry (e.g. protein isolation, binding and inhibition ELISAs) will be employed to assess the role of platelet adhesion receptors in platelet-tumor cell association and the potential of snake venom components to block this interaction. The daily language in the laboratory is English, but applicants are encouraged to learn German.
The applicant will perform the following tasks:
Isolation and identification of novel snake venom components by protein chemical means (chromatography, ELISA, etc.).
Isolation of platelets from human blood samples and their testing in aggregometry and flow cytometry.
Cultivation and cell biological tests on carcinoma cell lines and their transfection to modify their repertoire of adhesion receptors.
Cell adhesion and migration assays (impedance-based assays, microscopic techniques) under static and flow conditions.
