IPK Gatersleben is a large, internationally recognized centre of plant research that addresses problems of modern biology with an emphasis on crop plants. Our scientific expertise integrates a broad diversity of disciplines to elucidate the mechanisms underlying processes of plant development, metabolism, and interactions with the environment. Our research aims at the generation of fundamental knowledge and the development of genetic and biotechnological tools to spur the knowledge-based use of plant-genetic resources to optimize a variety of crop traits. Frequently, this involves co-operation with various national and international universities as well as public-private partnerships.
For the working group of Molecular Plant Nutrition we are looking for a PhD student.
Employment starting up as soon as possible and is limited for 36 months.
Research in our group is focused on the transport and sensing of nutrients, on genotypic factors determining nutrient efficiency in plants, and stress adaptations of primary metabolism. We combine molecular and metabolic approaches to investigate morphological and physiological responses of plants to abiotic stress situations and aim at identifying key processes and underlying genes crucial for nutrient acquisition and the maintenance of metabolism.
Your tasks:
The aim of this project is to characterize root exudates of Arabidopsis, their Fe-mobilizing properties and to identify underlying genes involved in root exudate-mediated iron acquisition. This work includes mutant screens, biochemical purification and chemical analysis of root metabolites incl. their apoplastic processing and their evaluation regarding their iron chelation, iron reduction and their ability to improve plant growth under iron deficiency. In addition, transgenic lines need to be prepared from isolated genes and analyzed to describe physiological, iron-related functions of the corresponding proteins. The project will be part of a cooperation among four labs from Germany and Austria.
Your qualification:
  • a master or diploma in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology or a related discipline
  • working experience in molecular biological techniques
  • solid background in physiology
  • strong ability for team work
  • fluent English communication skills
  • interest in the combination of basic and applied research
If you need further information feel free to contact Prof. Dr. Nicolaus von Wirén. You reach him under or phone +49 (0) 39482 5602.
