Dissection of molecular pathways leading to heart diseases

We are offering one position for a scientists (Ph.D. student) at the University of Heidelberg, Department of Internal Medicine III, Cardiology.

The position in the “Department of Molecular Genetics” lead by PD Dr. Benjamin Meder, is part of the recently established “EpiGenome-Center Heidelberg”, located together with the Institute of Computational Cardiology of the University of Heidelberg. The group is also member of the German Centre for Cardiovascular Research (DZHK) (www.dzhk.de) and the Institute for Cardiomyopathies Heidelberg (ICH) (http://www.klinikum.uni-heidelberg.de/Forschung-und-Wissenschaft.137823.0.html). The well-equipped laboratory is hosting state-of-the-art research platforms such as a Next-Generation-Sequencing- and Zebrafish-Core-Facility, offering a unique scientific environment.

Background: Heart failure and cardiomyopathies are a major burden on public health in industrialized countries because they are associated with a markedly reduced life expectancy and quality of life. Molecular studies revealed several genes, proteins, and miRNAs to be involved in the pathogenesis and progression of the diseases. However, many disease mechanisms are still unknown, hindering a more individualized and effective care.

The aim of this project is to investigate the role of novel genes, epigenetic marks and miRNAs in the pathogenesis of primary and secondary heart failure and identification of suitable targets for the development of diagnostic tests.

Methods that will be used include state-of-the-art technologies for gene sequencing (next-generation sequencing), miRNA and transcriptomic profiling, and fascinating functional model systems (cell culture and zebrafish embryos) and a wide range of further molecular methods like immunohistochemistry and genetic manipulations through e.g. CRISPR/Cas9 or TALEN approaches.
The PhD student will be trained in all techniques required for the project. A team of scientists, physicians scientists, and technicians will jointly work with the students on this innovative project.

Profile of candidate‘s qualification:
Team-minded, creative. No specific previous experience is required, but a background in molecular biology and genetics are of great benefit.
