The Paul-Ehrlich-Institut (PEI), Federal Institute for Vaccines and Biomedicines, is a world-renowned scientific institute devoted to improving public health by ensuring the safety and efficacy of vaccines and biomedicines both in Germany and throughout the world. The PEI carries out its mission through scientific research and medicinal product regulation. Internationally competitive research is carried out in the fields of virology, microbiology, allergology, immunology, hematology and cell and gene therapy.

 

The research group “Transposition and Genome Engineering“ (http://goo.gl/cZVbp9) in the Division of Medical Biotechnology is focusing on the biology, regulation and genetic applications of transposable elements. The research group has one open position for a

 

PhD student

Closing date: 14.02.2016 Salary grade: E 13/2 TVöD Job reference: 1/2016

 

 

Key responsibilities:

Potential projects include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Functional analysis of domesticated transposases
  • Interactions of transposable elements with the host cell genome
  • Development of the Sleeping Beauty transposon as a gene delivery tool for human gene therapy
  • Genetic screens with transposons
  • Engineering of transposon systems with respect to efficiency and target site selection

Essential criteria for applying:

  • Master or diploma degree in life sciences
  • Experience in molecular and cellular biology
  • Skills in bioinformatics is an advantage
  • Excellent communication skills in English
  • Enthusiasm for science
