The Research Center Borstel is an international science company funded federally and by the state with 550 employees. Our central task is research and patient care in the field of respiratory diseases. We operate both, infrastructure of basic research as well as a medical clinic. We have two major goals: to improve existing methods for the detection, prevention and treatment of lung diseases and to develop new, innovative therapeutic approaches.
Our research group Experimental Asthma Research is looking for:

2 PhD Students (m/f) (starting June 1st or later)

The group Experimental Asthma Research of Prof. Dr. Susanne Krauss-Etschmann investigates the influence of prenatal and early life environmental influences such as cigarette smoke on the development of chronic lung diseases, in particular asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
The successful candidate would work in detail on,
  • Assess early environmental influences on the lung microbiome in the development from fetus to adult mouse.
  • The influence of cigarette smoking on the lung microbiome and the development of chronic lung diseases in a mouse model and a human cohort.
  • The dynamics and reversibility of smoke-induced changes to the airway microbiota.
Your qualifications:
  • Candidates should hold a master's degree (or equivalent) in Natural or Life Sciences.
  • Excellent English skills (written and communication).
  • Knowledge of basic molecular biology techniques (qRT-PCR, Western Blot etc) and basic immunological knowledge.
  • Experience in working with animals is appreciated but not a prerequisite.
