A Ph.D. position in Neurobiology is available (starting date as soon as possible) in the laboratory of Prof. Ulrike Müller (IPMB, Department of Functional Genomics) at the University of Heidelberg.
We are interested in the physiological and pathological functions of the amyloid precursor protein APP gene family (Hick et al. 2015, Acta Neuropathol 129: 21). APP is not only central to the pathogenesis of Alzheimer´s disease, but is also crucial for synaptogenesis and synaptic plasticity. In particular the secreted APPsα fragment has neurotrophic properties and can rescue synaptic dysfunction in Alzheimer model mice (Fol et al, 2016, Acta Neuropathol 131: 247-266). Within an interdisciplinary project funded by the Else-Kröner-Fresenius Stiftung the successful applicant will study the synaptic role of APPsα and its delivery across the blood brain barrier. Techniques employed include state of the art molecular biology, biochemistry, imaging and work with genetically modified mouse mutants.
Requirements: The ideal candidate is highly motivated, open minded and holds a MSc in a relevant discipline of life science (e.g. Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Neuroscience, etc). We expect a solid background in neurobiology, biochemistry and cell biology. Experience with tissue culture and genetically modified mouse models would be a great advantage. We expect the successful candidate to participate in animal experimentation. Students will join the “Interdisciplinary Centre for Neurobiology IZN” that offers interdisciplinary training for participating PhD students.
Please send your application (including full CV, letter of motivation, copies of all exam results, contact details of two scientist for references) until May 31 to:
