PhD position (m/f) in Molecular Microbiology/Infection Biology
The strictly intracellular bacterial pathogens Chlamydiae are of great medical importance as they cause numerous diseases including sexually transmitted diseases and trachoma, the leading cause of blindness in the Third World. Furthermore, C. pneumoniae infection is associated with lung cancer. Chlamydiae highjack the eukaryotic cytoskeleton to facilitate invasion, replication and dissemination. While the role of the actin cytoskeleton during the chlamydial
infection has been studied, the function of the host‘s microtubule cytoskeleton is not understood. In this project, we will identify and characterize chlamydial proteins that regulate the microtubule cytoskeleton and determine their role in the infection process.
As C. pneumoniae is not genetically accessible, the eukaryotic model yeast S. pombe will be used as a tool to identify chlamydial proteins that modulate the microtubule cytoskeleton.
The PhD position is funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft.
