Within the project Analysis of Brain-derived Neurotrophic Factor Signaling in Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the Institute for Clinical Neurobiology (University Hospital, Julius-Maximilians-Universität Würzburg) invites applications for a
PhD student (German salary scheme TV-L E13/2).
Our research focuses on molecular mechanisms in motoneuron diseases, especially spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). SMA is a motoneuron disease leading to childhood death.

The project, financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft for three years aims to:

Detailed analysis of brain-derived-neurotrophic factor (BDNF) signaling in mouse models for spinal muscular atrophy (SMA).

Studies on the localization and trafficking of TrkB (BDNF receptor) in SMA motoneurons.

The importance of BDNF/TrkB signaling for the organization of the presynaptic cytoskeleton.

Analysis how altered excitability and altered TrkB signaling impact each other in SMA-motoneurons.

We are looking for a highly motivated PhD student with knowledge in neurobiology and good technical background in molecular biology (qRT PCR, Northern and Western Blots, cloning and cell culture techniques). The candidate will use advanced molecular biology and cell culture techniques including life cell imaging and iPSC techniques for studying alterations in diseased neurons. Motor function studies, histological analysis of mouse tissue and confocal microscopy will complete the project. The project profits from a strong cooperation and knowledge transfer between partner groups, and is well embedded in the research focus of the institute. He/she will have access to a modern and well-equipped research facility, will work with already available mouse models, and will be supported by technical assistance.
