The newly established International Research Training Group between The University of Melbourne in Australia and the Friedrich-Wilhelms-University Bonn in Germany offers 12 PhD student projects to study immunology and immunity to infection.

The Bonn & Melbourne Research and Graduate School (Bo&Merang) focuses on the role of myeloid immune cells and adaptive immunity in the context of infection and inflammation. Students will perform the core of their PhD project in Melbourne and will spend 1 year in Bonn, jointly supervised by internationally leading principal investigators from both universities.

Melbourne is internationally recognized for excellent research on immune cell subsets and the study of immunity to microbial infections. Bonn is a major centre of immunological research in Germany with research strengths in inflammatory diseases, microenvironmental and transcriptional immune regulation and immune pattern sensing. These research areas at Melbourne and Bonn are highly synergistic and the scientific exchange between Melbourne and Bonn has created a superbly conducive environment for the training of students. PhD projects will be fully embedded in the coordinated training programs at both locations.

The research projects address immunity to viral hepatitis, Malaria, Salmonella, Legionnaires' disease, influenza, HIV, melanoma and Alzheimer’s disease, study mechanisms such as inflammasome activation, cross-presentation, nucleic acid detection and immune cell communication and use advanced methodology like transcriptomics, proteomics, bioinformatics and intravital imaging. For further information on the individual projects and the supervising scientists see http://bomerang.iei-bonn.de/bomerang.html

We are seeking passionate PhD candidates who are highly motivated to solve scientific questions with modern immunological approaches in a competitive environment. The ideal candidate holds a M.Sc. with an above-average university degree in Biology, Immunology, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, or related fields with proven interest in immunology. Candidates with experience in relevant immunological research will be given priority. Excellent written and spoken English skills are mandatory.

Candidates can apply until 31st of July 2016 by submitting their credentials, CV and motivation letter to the address below. Candidates fulfilling the selection criteria will be interviewed by Skype or in person.
