The Sonderforschungsbereich 1177 (SFB 1177) on Molecular and Functional Characterization of Selective Autophagy has recently received funding by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) and is looking to recruit  
 
14 PhD students
(E13 65% TV-G-U)

The SFB will be established as an interdisciplinary research network between the Goethe University Frankfurt a. M., the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz, the Georg-Speyer-Haus in Frankfurt a. M. and the Institute of Molecular Biology gGmbH in Mainz. Projects within the SFB cover the complete range from molecular mechanisms of autophagy to functional studies in cellular models, model organisms and human disease models. Information on available projects is listed below; further details can be obtained from the respective group leaders or under www.SFB1177.de. The SFB 1177 is well embedded in the excellent research infrastructure at both universities; all participating sites offer access to state-of-the-art technologies, well-equipped laboratories, a vibrant scientific exchange and an internationally competitive scientific training program.

Candidates should have a first-class academic degree in a Life Science-related discipline (Master’s degree or equivalent for PhD positions), a strong background in biochemistry or cell biology (record of relevant peer-reviewed publications is mandatory for postdoctoral candidates), and be highly motivated and enthusiastic to join the fast-moving and internationally highly competitive field of autophagy research. As part of the SFB, we offer tailored interdisciplinary training to all researchers in the network, a framework of common scientific activities and a strong mentorship for future career development. PhD students will be affiliated with the Graduate School of either Frankfurt or Mainz University to ensure a well-structured, first-class education.

Applicants should choose their field of interest from the projects listed below and send their application in a single pdf-file including cover letter, CV, scanned academic degrees, list of publications and contact details of two references with contact details to the responsible group leader. Successful candidates are appointed from 01.01.2016 or later and will be located in Frankfurt or Mainz, depending on the project leader. The positions are initially limited to two years with the possibility of extension.

The limitation of the contracts is based on the legal framework defined by the “Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz” and the “Hochschulgesetz” of Hessen or Rheinland-Pfalz, respectively.
