The research at the Max Planck Institute (MPI) for Biophysical Chemistry in Göttingen encompasses a wide spectrum of scientific topics and techniques. Of central concern are the mechanisms by which cells, organelles and biomolecules fulfill their manifold tasks. Ultra-high-resolution microscopy, nanotechnology, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy, mass spectrometry and computer simulation are employed to delve ever-further into the nanocosmos of living cells.
 
The research group Mitochondrial Structure and Dynamics is investigating the mechanism by which inner-mitochondrial architecture is determined and maintained. We are using a wide variety of experimental approaches that include molecular and biochemical tools, and in particular electron and advanced super-resolution light microscopy.
 
We are currently inviting applications for
 
2 PhD-students (f/m) in mitochondrial architecture
 
The aim of the first project is to study the function of protein complexes that maintain the intricate folding of the mitochondrial inner membrane in cultivated human cells. Primary methods will be super-resolution microscopy, quantitative immuno-gold microscopy, molecular biology and cell culture. The second project focusses on the investigation of mitochondrial architecture and dynamics in the fly Drosophila melanogaster. The project will encompass fly genetics, molecular biology and advanced live-cell super-resolution light microscopy.
Previous experience with some of these topics would be an advantage but is not a strict requirement.
 
We are looking for highly motivated candidates that want to work in a multidisciplinary team on important cell biology questions. Applicants should hold a university degree in biology, biochemistry, or a related discipline. We offer an outstanding scientific environment with a lot of individual freedom. The positions are available immediately, but also candidates currently pursuing their master thesis are encouraged to apply.
