IPK Gatersleben is a large, internationally recognized centre of plant research that addresses problems of modern biology with an emphasis on crop plants. Our scientific expertise integrates a broad diversity of disciplines to elucidate the mechanisms underlying processes of plant development, metabolism, and interactions with the environment. Our research aims at the generation of fundamental knowledge and the development of genetic and biotechnological tools to spur the knowledge-based use of plant-genetic resources to optimize a variety of crop traits. Frequently, this involves co-operation with various national and international universities as well as public-private partnerships.
For the working group of Pathogen-Stress Genomics we are looking for a
doctoral researcher (PhD student) in molecular plant-pathogen interactions
Employment starting January 2016 is limited for 36 months and based on the terms and conditions of the Marie-Curie ETN project guidelines.
The group Pathogen-Stress Genomics is aiming at discovering and exploiting genes and alleles in barley and wheat for durable resistance against major fungal diseases, with special emphasis on the powdery mildew fungus Blumeria graminis and on Fusarium sp. causing head blight disease. For this purpose we are using approaches of quantitative genetics, functional genomics, and plant biotechnology.
Your tasks:
Training activities in EU project CEREALPATH ( will include pathology, RNAi technology, functional genomics & marker-assisted selection to determine the potential of host-induced gene silencing (HIGS) as both a biotechnological and naturally occurring resistance strategy in wheat. In particular, you will screen Fusarium culmorum target genes for strong HIGS effects by using the Barley-Stripe Mosaic virus (BSMV) as a HIGS trigger. Moreover, host genes identified in barley affecting HIGS efficiency will be used as genetic markers for resistance QTL-mapping and association genetic approaches in wheat. By small RNA sequencing you will also search for naturally occurring HIGS RNAs and test those via the BSMV system.
Your qualification:
The successful applicant will have a track record in molecular biology and basic knowledge in molecular plant-pathogen interactions. An understanding of molecular genetics is desirable.
