Doctoral position to study structural requirements and mechanisms involved in genome plasticity of Escherichia coli
Ref. 10149

Salary according to TV-L E13 (65 %)
Three year Position

Our group is interested in microbial evolution and adaptation. We employ comparative and functional genomics based approaches to study fundamental mechanisms involved in bacterial genome plasticity. Horizontal acquisition and the loss of genetic information play a key role for bacterial evolution and the adaptation of pathogens during pathogen-host-interaction. We study the genomic stability of pathogenic and commensal Escherichia coli strains and focus on factors involved in successful acquisition, but also in the instability of pathogenicity islands (PAIs). PAI-encoded integrases catalyze the chromosomal insertion as well as the excision of PAIs, and they usually specifically recognize their encoding PAI.

The successful applicant will characterize the regulation of PAI-encoded integrases and  factors that affect integrase function and their DNA sequence specificity.

The applicant should have a M.Sc./Diploma and a strong background either in microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, or infection biology. In addition, basic knowledge in bioinformatics, -omics techniques and interest in bacterial pathogenesis is beneficial.

The position is available from January 2016. Deadline for applications is November 15th, 2015.
