for a project in applied life sciences
A Master student position is open in the Alcazar laboratory “Experimental Pulmonology” at the Department of Pediatric and Adolescent Medicine, University of Cologne, Germany (starting 01.03.2016), to study the molecular mechanisms of normal and abnormal late lung development.  Dr. Alejandre Alcazar recently returned from the Stanford University and started his own research group funded by the DFG. The main objective of the project – in collaboration with the University of Düsseldorf - is to investigate the impact of nutritional factors during gestation and postnatal period on lung development, in particular on the pathogenesis of bronchial asthma. We are investigating whether nutritional intervention in an early stage of life can prevent the development of features of chronic lung disease. This applied life science project will offer the possibility to learn and experience a variety of techniques to address our scientific goal: protein and gene analyses, histology and immunhistochemistry, primary cell isolation, cell culture studies, and cell function assays.
Your responsibilities will include:
 
  • Working on the research project focused on deciphering the mechanisms of normal and  abnormal lung development using unique newborn animal models
  • Discovery of the impact of nutritional modification on lung development
  • Characterization of the pulmonary phenotype, including quantitative morphometric lung analysis, immunhistochemical-immunfluorescence studies
  • Assessment of protein and gene expression/interaction in the lung
  • Publishing impactful original research papers
 
Minimum qualifications:
 
  • BSc degree in biology, molecular life sciences or a related field
  • A strong interest in lung development and applied biology
  • Candidates with a bachelor thesis in molecular biology and lung biology are preferred
  • Previous experience in protein analyses and immunhistochemistry is preferred
  • Candidates should be creative and capable of pursue a competitive research project while       working in collaboration with postdoc and other team members under the supervision of the team leader
