Ph.D. Position (Salary Grade: 65% TV-L 13)

One Ph.D. position is now available in the newly established junior research group of Prof. Dr. Viktor Stein, at the Faculty of Biology at the TU Darmstadt for an enthusiastic, highly-motivated, hardworking individual. The position is initially limited until 31.12.2018.

Research in the laboratory is funded by the State of Hessen's LOEWE Program for Scientific and Economic Excellence “iNAPO” (Ionconducting Nanopores) project on the topic entitled “Protein Engineering of Ionconducting Nanopores”.

Applicants should have a Diploma or Master degree in Chemistry, Biomolecular Engineering, Biochemistry, Synthetic Biology, Biotechnology, Biophysics, Pharmacy or Biology (molecular focus preferred). We are seeking a highly motivated person who wishes to pursue their career in science with a competitive CV (Master-Thesis score: “sehr gut” in the German score system or equivalent), regular period of study, with the ability to work independently, as well as a team member. Applicants should have a cooperative personality and show enthusiasm for actively participating in the interdisciplinary “iNAPO” research network. Very good communication and writing skills (English) are expected.

Research Topic
The molecular transport of nutrients and ions is mediated by highly efficient and selective nanopores across cellular membranes in living organisms. In many cases, their mechanism of action is generally well understood. Yet, harnessing their many useful properties for biotechnological applications such as biosensing and molecular diagnostics remains largely unexplored. The goal of the project is to equip naturally occurring nanopores with artificial switching and sensor functions. To this end, individual nanopores will be recombinantly produced in either E. coli or cell-free expression systems while nanopore sensors with custom response functions will be created using a combination of high-throughput screening and structure-guided protein design. Engineered nanopore sensors will be characterized biophysically detailing structure-function relationships that underlie their mechanism of action. This basic knowledge will then guide the subsequent construction of nanopore sensors that in the long term can be deployed in environmental monitoring or as biomedical and life-style diagnostics.

The project is integrated into the highly collaborative research environment at the TU Darmstadt comprising experts from biology, chemistry, physics, material science and electrical engineering (http://www.inapo.tu-darmstadt.de/inapo/index.de.jsp).

Opportunity for further qualification (doctoral dissertation) is given. The fulfillment of the research and service requirements attached to this position serve at the same time as fulfillment of the academic requirements for a candidate's doctoral degree.
