The Institute of Nutritional Medicine, Department of Immunology at the University Hohenheim, Germany is recruiting a PhD student to work in the field of Innate Immunity in the laboratory of Prof. Thomas Kufer. The position is funded by a DFG project and is available October 1, 2015 for a duration of three years
The research interest of the Department is to understand the mechanisms used by the innate immune system to combat infection. In particular we are interested to decipher the mode of activation and the molecular signalling induced by a group pattern recognition receptors, the NLR-proteins.
Members of the NLR family contribute to innate immune responses towards bacteria and viruses as well as to the regulation of MHC gene expression. We recently showed that signal transduction downstream of the NLR protein Nod1 is linked to remodelling of the host cell actin cytoskeleton (Bielig et al. PlosPathogens 2014). Using molecular analysis combined with cell biological approaches, this project aims to further our understanding of this pathway.
The successful applicant will hold a master-degree or equivalent qualification in immunology, cell-biology or a related discipline. Basic research experience in the field molecular biology, immunology or biochemistry is required. The applicant should have a strong background in cell-biology, immunology and biochemistry. Knowledge of microscopic techniques is a plus. A high level of motivation for scientific work as well as good English speaking and writing skills are expected.
