PhD position (75%, TV-L E 13) in plant population genetics

In the frame of the DFG Collaborative Research Centre 1211: Earth – Evolution at the Dry Limit, the University of Bonn invites applications for a

PhD position (75%, TV-L E 13) in plant population genetics

to begin on January 1st, 2017 at the Nees Institute for Plant Biodiversity in the research group of Prof. Dr. Dietmar Quandt. The Collaborative Research Centre “Earth - Evolution at the Dry Limit” works at the interface between landscape evolution and biological evolution, which are mutually dependent. In this collaborative framework the PhD position is embedded in a project hosted at the Nees Institute analysing the biogeographic history of plant communities in the Atacama Desert. Specifically, the announced PhD project aims to analyze whether the fragmented distributions of selected plant species in the Atacama Desert is reflected in their genetic diversity, or whether the latter is dominated by effects of the seed bank and/or dispersal events. Therefore, 2-4 extensive (approx. 3-4 weeks) collecting trips to the Atacama Desert are part of the program.

The position's requirements are:
- Diploma, or Master in Biology, Plant Science, Evolutionary Biology, or related fields
- proven qualifications with particular relevance to plant evolutionary biology and/or phylogenetics/population genetics
- high motivation, active participation and commitment to the CRC program
- interest and experience in field campaigns
- language skills: English (written and spoken), preferably also Spanish

Application documents:
- letter of motivation
- Curriculum vitae
- transcripts of studies
- two letters of recommendation

The temporary position is limited to the duration of the Ph.D., but restricted to a maximum duration of 3 years. Starting date of the position is January 1st, 2017.
The University of Bonn is an equal opportunities employer.

Applications in German or English should be sent in electronic form by October 1st, 2016 to Prof. Dr. Dietmar Quandt at the following e-mail address: (subject: PhD Application CRC1211).
