We are one of 83 institutes of the "Max Planck Society for the Advancement of Science". Our main focus lies in fundamental research. Currently, we have a staff of about 270, in three scientific departments and one Max Planck research group.

Designing wound dressings to aid the natural wound healing process is a major challenge for biomedical applications. Recently different experiments have been performed to understand the underlying chemo-mechanical impacts during this vital process well-controlled cell monolayers. Within this PhD project, we will expand these experiments to quantitatively study realistic 3-dimensional (3D) organotypic skin models and aid the wound healing mechanism by smart synthetic hydrogel covers. This project addresses these challenges in a truly interdisciplinary: In a molecular systems engineering approach we design smart, hyaluronan-based hydrogel materials with defined chemo-mechanical proper­ties. These functional hydrogels serve as smart wound covers, forming supporting shields for epithelial cell guiding and for the quantitative analysis of wound closure in realistic organotypic skin models including live cell imaging.
