PhD positions for 3 years is available at the Institutes of Experimental Immunology (IEI), University of Bonn Medical School, Germany.
The impact of chronic inflammation on organ integrity and organ specific immunity against infectious microorganisms is yet largely unknown. Patients suffering from liver fibrosis or cirrhosis are more susceptible to viral and bacterial infections, which often persist in these patients. Yet, the underlying cellular and molecular mechanisms have not been elucidated. From our previous work we know that liver cirrhosis and fibrosis negatively affect the anti-viral host defense and the clearance of viral infection. Using a new model system we started to investigate the cellular and molecular mechanisms to characterize why anti viral immune responses are impaired during liver fibrosis and cirrhosis.
We aim to investigate the impact of inflammatory diseases in the liver on the function of innate and adoptive immune cells. In particular we will put emphasis on comprehensive as well as the induction, expansion and function of the T cells and antigen presenting cells, which are crucial for the control of infection but also for organ homeostasis and regeneration. In this project we aim to elucidate the cellular and molecular mechanisms by which inflammatory processes in the liver affects the outcome of the immune response, which provide insight why inflammatory processes persevere chronic infections that in turn perpetuate inflammations.
The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated, team-oriented graduate with a strong interest in innate immunity and immune responses to bacterial infections. Experience with animal experimentation, cell culture and molecular biology techniques are advantageous. Candidates should hold a master’s degree in Bio-Medicine, Biology, or a related subject.
The PhD position will be integrated into the THEME PhD Program of the University of Bonn Medical School. We offer supportive mentoring and a well-equipped laboratory.
Salary will be according to the German salary scale TV-L 13 65%. The University of Bonn is an equal opportunity employer. Preference will be given to suitably qualified female applicants or handicapped people, all other considerations being equal.
