Job description
The Mitochondrial Neurobiochemistry Group of the Radboud Center of Mitochondrial Medicine (RCMM) investigates mainly the role of mitochondria in neurodegenerative diseases. We aim at identifying and understanding the molecular and signaling mechanisms underlying mitochondrial diseases, such as MELAS, and neurodegenerative diseases, such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease.

Our research spectrum includes the identification and characterization of new biomarker proteins which are involved in mitochondrial and neurodegenerative diseases. We analyze the structural specifics and identify the function of those newly found proteins and characterize their mitochondrial and cellular functions and involvement in signaling pathways.

The methods applied for these studies include state-of-the-art mass spectrometry methods, cell culture and knockdown techniques, methods of molecular biology, protein chemistry, and fluorescence cell imaging. We are expanding our investigations from in vitro to in vivo studies mainly using rodents as a model system.

The established Mitochondrial Neurobiochemistry Group is fully integrated into the RCMM in which more than 60 dedicated people work in the field of mitochondrial medicine addressing challenging questions reaching from basic to applied research including clinical applications.


Tasks and responsibilities of the Applicant
Designing and performing scientific research in the area of mitochondrial biology and neuroscience in health and disease
Generating and analyzing data in order to contribute to scientific publications and presenting results at scientific meetings
Working in an international team and stimulating environment
Completing the research project with a scientific dissertation


Profile of the Applicant   
Master or Diploma degree in Biochemistry, Biology, Biomedical Sciences or comparable degree
Strong interest in mitochondrial and neuroscientific research at the frontiers of science
Enthusiastic and highly motivated individual with a flexible work attitude   
Skills and experience in protein biochemistry and molecular/cellular biology
Permitted to work with animals is advantageous
Fluency in spoken and written English
Open-minded for new approaches and plenty of team spirit 


Organization
Combining research in the fields of mitochondrial and neurodegenerative diseases the Mitochondrial Neurobiochemistry Group is fully integrated into the RCMM which represents an international reference center for clinical care, diagnostics and research of patients suspected for or with established disturbances of the mitochondrial energy metabolism. The RCMM in Nijmegen integrates all mitochondrial medicine clinical, diagnostic and research activities of the Radboud University Medical Center and Radboud University. The RCMM staff members have extensive working relationships with mitochondrial centers across the world. The RCMM research mission is to understand molecular and cellular bioenergetics in health and disease in order to make substantial contributions in developing a cure for mitochondrial disease. As such a from-molecule-to-human and from physiology-to pathology-to therapy strategy has been adopted.
The research at the RCMM serves as a basis for academic teaching and training of Master and PhD students. The RCMM is part of a leading multidisciplinary graduate school studying and teaching molecular mechanisms of disease in the fields of molecular biomedicine, biology and translational research.
