The CECAD-Cluster of Excellence in Aging Research (Marcus Krüger Laboratory) of the University of Cologne (Germany) invites applications for a

PhD student position (m/f) Protein Homeostasis in Aging and Disease

with a weekly working time of 25.89 hours (65% Position). The salary is based on the German TVL-13 scale if terms and conditions under collective bargaining law are fulfilled. The initial contract is limited until 31 August 2017.

Summary:
Living organisms respond to a wide range of extracellular signals resulting in the activation of intracellular signaling networks. Our research interest is to explore basic mechanisms of cell signaling that control protein function and homeostasis. We use modern mass spectrometer to characterize the dynamics of post translational modifications (PTMs), including phosphorylation, acetylation, and ubiquitination. Thus, investigating the function of PTMs and their association to enzymatic activity under regular and perturbed conditions is important for obtaining a better understanding of cellular systems critical for human diseases.

Job description:
We are seeking highly motivated PhD student candidates for our group investigating the role of PTMs in model organisms to understand human disorders such as Type 2 Diabetes and neuronal degeneration diseases. We use state-of-the-art SILAC-based proteomics, molecular biology techniques, mammalian genetics, and bioinformatics to investigate complex cellular networks in living organisms. The overall aim of our research is the functional characterization of signaling pathways to decipher the pathogenesis of age-related human diseases.

Qualification:
Applicants should have a strong interest in LC-MS, biochemistry and background in molecular biology. Besides strong motivation we expect the ability for teamwork, good communication skills and flexibility in mind.
