in  Cell Biology
  with a focus on Cancer Research:

Chromosome Segregation and Mitosis Research in Human Cancer Cells


 
The position is available in the lab of Prof. Holger Bastians, PhD., at the Institute of Molecular Oncology.
 
The Bastians lab studies the mechanisms of chromosome segregation during mitosis in human cancer cells. This is highly relevant, since ongoing chromosome missegregation leading to aneuploidy is a hallmark of human cancer and can contribute to tumorigenesis, tumor progression and the development of therapy resistance.
The planned PhD project aims to investigate the role of abnormal microtubule dynamics as a key defect in cancer cells leading to abnormal progression of mitosis. In this regard we are interested in investigating the cross-talk of microtubules with the cytoskeleton, which might be crucial for chromosome segregation and also for cell migration and tumor cell invasion.

We are using human tissue culture cells as model systems and state-of-the-art cell biological and molecular biology methods including live-cell-microscopy, deconvolution microscopy, FACS analyses etc.
 
Applicants should hold a master degree in biological sciences (molecular medicine, human biology and related areas are preferred) and should have a keen interest in cell biology and molecular oncology.
 
The positions are fully funded and Start of the project will be in October/November 2015 or later and can be arranged with the candidates.

Candidates not yet finished with the Master thesis are also welcome to apply!
