PhD Student

Virus Genomics

The Heinrich Pette Institute - Leibniz Institute for Experimental Virology (HPI), is committed to research on the biology of different human viruses as well as the pathogenesis of viral diseases (http://www.hpi-hamburg.de). The HPI offers the opportunity to perform cutting-edge research in a world-class research environment with excellent technical and animal facilities.

We are looking for a highly motivated, team-oriented student with a diploma/master degree (or equivalent) and experience in at least one of the disciplines and related techniques of molecular biology, chromatin research or virology. Prior experience in the field of DNA tumor viruses would be welcome.

The position is to be filled for up to three years in the “Virus Genomics” group (head: Prof. Adam Grundhoff) with the possibility of extension. The starting date is as soon as possible. Payment and social benefits will be in accordance with the regulations of the German TV-AVH (salary agreement for public service employees).

Work in the research group of Adam Grundhoff focuses on tumorigenic DNA viruses and molecular mechanisms that allow viral persistence and contribute to virus-induced disease (http://www.hpi-hamburg.de/en/research-teams/research-groups/virus-genomics/).

The specific PhD project will perform research on Merkel cell polyomavirus (MCPyV), a recently discovered novel human tumor virus. While asymptomatic infection with MCPyV is widely distributed in the healthy population, the virus can cause highly aggressive skin tumors in immunosupressed patients. The prospective student will employ stat of the art molecular biology tools to study manipulation of host cells by MCPyV, in particular with regard to alterations of cellular chromatin which may predispose cells to transformation.

If you have further questions, please do not hesitate to contact Adam Grundhoff directly (Email: adam.grundhoff@hpi.uni-hamburg.de).

Handicapped applicants with otherwise similar professional qualification and competence will be preferred.
