PhD student position
 
in Cell Biology and Molecular Oncology  

The position is available in the lab of Prof. Holger Bastians, PhD., at the Institute of Molecular Oncology.  
The lab is interested in the molecular basis of cancer phenotypes that are acquired during tumor progression and during metastasis. These phenotypes include a high degree of aneuploidy, which provides a high adaptation capability to the cells and, on the other hand, the increased ability to migrate and to invade into tissues, which is an important step during metastasis.
 
The planned project for a PhD thesis will focus on the role of a functional interplay between microtubules and the actin cytoskeleton required for cell migration and invasion as well as for chromosome segregation during mitosis. This focus will also include the investigation of the mechanisms of the epithelial-to-mesenchymal-transition (EMT).
The aim of the project is to define common triggers for cancer phenotypes that are frequently observed during metastasis in order to develop novel therapies suppressing deadly metastasis of cancer.

We are using human tissue culture cells as model systems and state-of-the-art cell biological and molecular biology methods including live-cell-microscopy, deconvolution microscopy, FACS analyses etc.
 
Applicants should hold a master degree in biological sciences (molecular medicine, human biology and related areas are preferred) and should have a keen interest in basic research at the borderline between cell biology and molecular oncology.
