Plant trait responses to the environment and their effects on ecosystem properties

 Carl von Ossietzky-Universität Oldenburg  Oldenburg
The Landscape Ecology Group at the Carl‐von‐Ossietzky University of Oldenburg in Germany invites applications for a

PhD position from 16th of May until 15th of December 2018 (TV‐L E13 (50%))

to study responses of plants to environmental conditions as well as effects of plants on ecosystem properties based on their functional traits.

The subproject “Plant trait responses to the environment and their effects on ecosystem properties” is a project of the German Federal Institute of Hydrology (Bundesanstalt für Gewässerkunde, bfg) as part of the research unit “Tidal Band Science and Services (tibass)” and in collaboration with the University of Antwerp, Belgium.

The research objective of tibass is the assessment of ecosystem services, especially bank protection by macrophytes along the Elbe river banks in order to identify embanked areas suitable for restoring natural vegetation. In order to promote a delivery of these services it is necessary to understand the underlying processes. As such, this subproject focuses on a) the responses of plant functional traits to environmental drivers (tidal range, inundation, salinity, nutrient availability etc.), b) trait‐trait interactions (allometric scaling relationships and trait‐offs between traits), c) the effects of plant traits to ecosystem functions (wave energy, sedimentation rates, productivity).

The field work will take place along the Elbe estuary, and will be organised together with our partners at the bfg in Koblenz and the University of Antwerp. Data analysis and paper writing will be done at the University of Oldenburg.
The position can be filled from 16th of May 2016 onwards and will be funded until 15th of December 2018. The main field seasons will be 2016.
Successful candidates are required to have a master or diploma degree in the field of vegetation science / landscape ecology / plant biology, to be able to work independently, and to be fluent in English language. The candidate should be in the possession of a driving licence.

Oldenburg University is an equal opportunity employer. Women or disabled persons are given priority over legally unprivileged applicants with an equal suitability, qualification and specialised knowledge.
