The Leibniz Institute on Aging - Fritz Lipmann Institute e.V. (FLI) is a research institute, which has the objective of understanding the molecular mechanisms of aging. Thereby we would like to contribute to healthy aging in humans. Various animal models (e.g. mice and fish) help us to generate relevant knowledge on the causes and the mechanisms of age-associated diseases and to investigate new therapeutic approaches. Scientists from many different nations conduct research at FLI.

Postdoc Position
in epigenetics of aging
 
Research focus of the Lab / Research projects:
The research group focuses on the functional characterization the epigenome alterations that occur during adult stem cell aging. Dr. Francesco Neri has identified several important epigenetic mechanisms occurring in the nuclei of mammalian cells. In particular, he characterized the dynamics of promoter DNA methylation during embryonic stem cells maintenance, early development, adult tissues and cancer development. Emerging evidence indicates that epigenetic factors impact on the functionality and homeostasis of adult stem cells during aging favouring in this way the loss of tissue maintenance and the selective advantage of dominant clones. Among these factors, DNA methylation has been found altered in aging induced diseases and cancer development and two of the principal enzymes responsible for the establishment/removing of DNA methylation (DNMT3A and TET2) are the principal targets of genetic mutations during aging. However, systematic approaches have never been performed and the functional and mutual relationship between epigenetics and aging is still poorly understood.
We carry out studies in several model systems including intestinal, hematopoietic, germline, muscle and neural stem cells both from mouse and human. We use cutting-edge technologies for the isolation of primary cells, culturing by using organoids or in vivo systems, generation of stable cell lines, genome-wide experiments (e.g. total and polyA RNA-seq, ChIP-seq, ATAC-seq, MeDIP-seq, Bisulfite-seq, TAB-seq, MAB-seq).
 
Profile of the candidate/Requirements:
Creative, self-motivated candidates with an interest in developing an independent research program. Requirements include:
  • Succesful degree in Biology, Chemistry or Bioinformatics, and PhD in a relevant field
  • highly self-motivated with a genuine interest in epigenetics and/or aging
  • good team-working capabilities
  • know-how in molecular biology and genome-wide experiments
  • experience in cell culture and manipulation, animal work, epigenetics, bioinformatics are welcome
 
We offer
  • a position in a well-equipped research group of a high quality institute for age research, which harbours several state-of-the-art facilities. Our work is embedded in the Beutenberg Campus, an interdisciplinary base for innovative research.
  • a position integrated in the FLI PostDoc Network. The Network promotes interdisciplinary collaborations.
  • a contract which is limited to two years initially. The contract conditions and the salary will be according to the collective labour agreement for public service employees of the federal states of Germany (TV-L E13)
