The Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Max-Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology have recently established the LOEWE-Center for Synthetic Microbiology, SYNMIKRO. Research assistant
(PhD position)
 
Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 50 %). The position starts as soon as possible and is limited to a period of 3 years and will offer the possibility of further scientific qualification in the frame of the assigned duties.

The focus of the project is the analysis of supercoiling dependent gene regulation and the crosstalk with classical gene regulation based on DNA binding proteins. DNA supercoiling acts as a global regulator, influencing the expression of the majority of genes in E.coli. In the course of the project the successful applicant will generate time-resolved RNA-seq data of strains with altered DNA supercoiling and will investigate changes in the temporal and spatial gene expression pattern of the bacterial chromosome. The results will be verified and studied in greater detail using synthetic DNA constructs. The long term goal is the construction of regulatory circuits on the basis of DNA supercoiling. During the project the successful applicant will have the opportunity to present the work to other colleagues within the department and on conferences and will participate in practical courses.

Applications are invited from talented and highly motivated graduates who hold or expect to gain a Masters degree or equivalent in Biology, Biochemistry or related disciplines. Experience in handling microorganisms and practical experience with laboratory equipment (S1) are required. Highly appreciated are computer programming skills (e.g. Java, C++, R) and experience with real-time RT-PCR. However, these skills can be acquired in the course of the project.
