Our laboratory aims to identify and study genes that protect key organs such as the developing brain from low oxygen stress (hypoxia), a major cause of cerebral palsy and seizure disorders. We combine genome-wide techniques with model organism studies in the zebrafish and mouse with the goal of discovering novel therapeutic targets to help prevent irreversible brain injury.
We have established and optimized an embryonic zebrafish model to study protection against hypoxic injury in detail using a functional genomic approach. Using this developmental zebrafish model, we validated five novel hypoxia-protective genes from hundreds of hypoxia-regulated genes we identified via differential expression microarray: irs2, crtc3, and camk2g2 have been previously implicated in insulin and glucose metabolism, while btr01 and ncam2 are previously uncharacterized. These results extend our understanding of the mechanisms of hypoxic preconditioning and affirm the discovery potential of this novel vertebrate hypoxic stress model (see recent publications below). Candidates will receive training in performing the follwing types of experiments:

a) Molecular Biology
b) Biochemistry
c) Tissue/Cell Biology
d) Immunology
e) Histology

Candidates will be expected to plan and execute detailed experiments, prepare research plans and assist in the development of new techniques, record and interpret results, create spreadsheets, process specimens for in-lab and outside-lab analysis, and prepare reagents and stock solutions.

The lab currently contains scientific and medical postdoctoral fellows, undergraduates, and technicians. A comitment of 6-12 months is preferred. We are a "work hard, play hard" environment in lovely San Diego and are surrounded by the natural beauty of the  ocean, desert, and mountains, as well as the rich scientific environment at the University of California, San Diego. We look forward to your interest and candidacy.
