for two years initially. The project will be associated to the Center for Sepsis Control and Care (CSCC; www.cscc.uniklinikum-jena.de/en).

Candida albicans is the most common pathogenic yeast of humans. In contrast to other fungal pathogens, C. albicans belongs to the normal microbiota of the human intestinal tract and other mucosal surfaces. It usually only causes infections when natural barriers are breached or the immune system is compromised. As part of the microbiome, C. albicans interacts with various bacteria and these interactions likely influence pathogenesis of both fungal and bacterial infections originating in the gastrointestinal tract. As these interactions are only poorly understood to date, we aim to characterize how interactions between C. albicans and pathogenic bacteria influence both colonisation and disease using combinations of in vitro and in vivo approaches.

Candidate’s profile: We expect a PhD in Life Sciences (e.g. Medicine, Veterinary Medicine, Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology). The applicant should have excellent communication skills (English) and should be able to supervise Master and PhD students and perform team-oriented as well as independent work. Practical experience in Mycology/Microbiology or Infection Biology is essential and experience in handling laboratory mice is highly advantageous.

We offer a multifaceted scientific project with excellent technical facilities, a place in a young, committed team, as well as strong scientific collaborations. The successful candidate will be hosted in the independent Research Group Microbial Immunology (Prof. Dr. Ilse Jacobsen) at the HKI. The HKI is embedded in the outstanding scientific environment of the Beutenberg Campus providing state-of-art research facilities and a highly integrative network of life science groups.

Salary is paid according to German TV-L (salary agreement for public service employees). As an equal opportunity employer the HKI is committed to increase the percentage of female scientists and therefore especially encourages them to apply.
