Project funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG/RTG1715) to BQ; 3 years - extension possible - TV-L 0.5 and 0.65 E13 position, respectively
 
available to characterize novel cytoskeletal and membrane-modulating effector proteins and their subcellular regulation in the development and plastic adaptation of the morphologies and function of cells.

The aim of our internationally well-known research team is to gain a molecular understanding of how the cortical actin cytoskeleton and specialized proteins, which are able to modulate the topology of the plasma membrane, shape cellular compartments and entire cells.  
Such processes contribute to development, plasticity and function of cells and cellular networks, such as those formed by neurons in the brain.
 
We are currently studying several molecular players at the membrane/actin interface and are characterizing their role in both cytoskeletal and membrane dynamics shaping cells and cellular subcompartments. The lab publishes cutting edge science in international top-ranking journals of cell biology.

We are seeking a productive addition to our team
  • for studying membrane and actin dynamics in cell lines, in primary neuronal cultures, and in mouse and rat tissue sections and preparations
  • for molecular/mechanistic studies e.g. by in vitro reconstitutions of protein/protein interactions, actin dynamics and/or of membrane interactions and modulations, respectively.
  • for unraveling mechanisms of regulation of such components, in particular of the actin nucleator Cobl and membrane-modulating proteins and protein complexes thereof
 
Applicants should have a solid theoretical and practical knowledge of modern biochemistry, cell and/or neurobiology. Suitable technical experience is a strong plus for your application; however, the lab also provides excellent further training.
In particular, technical experience in analyzing protein/protein and/or protein/lipid interactions as well as in deciphering and functionally characterizing regulatory protein modifications is appreciated. Knowledge of advanced methods of fluorescence microscopy (fixed and/or live) is a strong plus as well.
Additionally,  biochemical and biophysical methods required for studying actin cytoskeletal dynamics, membrane interactions and dynamics are of course an advantage but not a prerequisite.
 
Candidates need to be distinguished by a high motivation to succeed in science. Candidates should furthermore be kind, efficient and reliable team-players and able to integrate into our international team smoothly. The PhD project will furthermore be integrated into the RTG (research training group) 1715.  
Knowledge of the german language is not required because of the internationality of our group, of the RTG and of life in the young and vibrant university town of Jena. Fluent English, however, is a prerequisite.
 
The Institute for Biochemistry I provides a stimulating research environment with excellent, modern technical equipment in a recently completely reconstructed building right in the center of Jena - one of the top-ranking and most lively biotech and university cities of Germany
(ranked 2nd in the career atlas of all German cities – chasing Munich!).
