TV-L 0.5 and 0.65 E13 position, respectively - - extension of PhD project (or as subsequent posdoc) is possible
available to study the interactions and subcellular distribution and dynamics of novel cytoskeletal and membrane-modulating effector proteins and protein complexes thereof as well as complexes with signaling lipids during the development and plastic adaptation of the morphologies and function of nerve cells.
Technically the project includes an innovative combination of freeze-fracturing, immunogoldlabeling and electron microscopy, protein biochemical and cell biological examinations.
The aim of our internationally well-known research team is to gain a molecular understanding of how the cortical actin cytoskeleton and specialized proteins, which are able to modulate the topology of the plasma membrane, shape cellular compartments and entire cells. Such processes contribute to development, plasticity and function of cells and cellular networks, such as those formed by neurons in the brain.
We are currently studying several molecular players at the membrane/actin interface and are characterizing their role in both cytoskeletal and membrane dynamics giving rise to defined shapes of cells and cellular subcompartment. The lab publishes cutting edge science in international top-ranking journals of cell biology.

We are seeking a productive addition to our team to combine a recently established method, which allows for the direct visualization and quantitation of specifically (the) membrane-associated (pool of) proteins in cultured cells and tissue of wild-type and knock-out mice by freeze-fracturing of membranes/immunogoldlabeling/electron microscopy (see e.g. Schneider et al., 2014 J. Cell Biol.), with modern methods of light microscopy and biochemical and cell biological studies of protein/lipid interactions to unravel organizational principles at the plasma membrane, such as those brought about by cholesterol-rich lipid rafts or putative PIP2 and PIP3 signalling domains and components thereof, and to study the role of membrane-associated effector proteins and signaling lipids in the development and plastic adaptations of neurons (such as LTP and LTD) – correlates of learning and memory processes.
Applicants should have a solid theoretical and practical knowledge of modern cell and/or neurobiology. Some experience in electron microscopy methods, biochemistry and modern fluorescence microscopy techniques is highly appreciated but not a requirement, as (further) training will be provided.
Candidates need to be distinguished by a high motivation to succeed in science. Candidates should be kind, efficient and reliable team-players able to integrate into our team as well as into the Electron Microscopy Center smoothly.
Knowledge of the german language is not required because of the internationality of our group and of life in the young and vibrant university town of Jena. Fluent English, however, is a prerequisite.
The Institute for Biochemistry I provides a stimulating research environment with excellent technical equipment in a recently completely reconstructed building right in the center of Jena - one of the top-ranking and most lively biotech and university cities of Germany (ranked 2nd in the career atlas of all German cities – chasing Munich!).
