" Master switches in cardiac ischemia "

The SFB 1116 is a Collaborative Research Center funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)  and intends to identify cardiac and systemic effector mechanisms (master switches), in the acute/subacute phase after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that determine the morbidity and mortality after AMI and could be used as future therapeutic targets.
We offer a structured international 3 years doctoral program in our integrated Research Training Group (RTG1116) which includes an excellent research environment, a comprehensive curriculum and a broad supervision and mentoring network jointly educating natural scientists in the field of cardiovascular biology. The program is complemented by specific seminars as well as an individualized curriculum comprising lectures, lab and soft-skill courses, congresses, and symposia. Communication and teaching language throughout SFB 1116 is English.

FTO-Function post myocardial ischemia: Epigenetic and metabolic effects
Project description:
Fto (fat mass and obesity-associated) is associated with obesity in humans. Preliminary results in Fto-negative mice indicate improved cardiac remodeling post AMI. Recently it was discovered that Fto can act as RNA demethylase. Therefore, it is proposed to analyze the cardiac RNA methylome post AMI. In addition, the adipokine secretion by adipocytes of Fto negative mice will be investigated with respect to fibroblast differentiation and immune cell responses. The long-term aim is the identification of Fto targets (master switches) with protective effects post AMI.
Project start: available from right now for up to three years
Eligibility criteria for PhD track (PhD or Dr. rer. nat.):
  • M.Sc. in basic sciences or equivalent graduation
  • Proof of English proficiency as English is the graduate school’s official language (e.g. TOEFL or similar test, not for native speakers)
