The newly funded Collaborative Research Center 1116
" Master switches in cardiac ischemia "
(Director: Prof. Dr. Jens Fischer) at the Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf
invites applications for 1 open PhD student positions (TV-L E13, 65%) The SFB 1116 is a Collaborative Research Center funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG)  and intends to identify cardiac and systemic effector mechanisms (master switches), in the acute/subacute phase after acute myocardial infarction (AMI) that determine the morbidity and mortality after AMI and could be used as future therapeutic targets.

We offer a structured international 3 years doctoral program in our integrated Research Training Group (RTG1116) which includes an excellent research environment, a comprehensive curriculum and a broad supervision and mentoring network jointly educating natural scientists in the field of cardiovascular biology. The program is complemented by specific seminars as well as an individualized curriculum comprising lectures, lab and soft-skill courses, congresses, and symposia. Communication and teaching language throughout SFB 1116 is English.

Project: Arteriogenesis

Project description: 
Within a newly founded collaborative research effort (SFB1116) we are investigating the temporal and spatial coordination of blood vessel formation (arteriogenesis) in response to ischemia oft he heart and hindlimbs. In (transgenic) animal models and tissue culture experiments, we investigate the signal transduction starting with increased blood flow via vasodilation to structural remodeling of arterial walls. Specifically, we are investigating the role of integrins and the interaction with these integrins with the extracellular matix during mechanotransduction of arterial blood vessels. Besides histological and immunofluorescence techniques in vivo ultrasound of a cardiac infarct and hind limb ischemia model are used. Cell culture research includes endothelial cell models grown under different flow conditions. The project is a cross-faculty project of the medical together with the natural science and mathematical faculty of Heinrich Heine University that is supervised by PD Dr. C. Heiss (Vascular Medicine) and Prof. Dr. E. Lammert (Metabolic Physiology).

Project start: available from right now for up to three years
Eligibility criteria for PhD track (PhD or Dr. rer. nat.):
  • M.Sc. in basic sciences or equivalent graduation
  • Proof of English proficiency as English is the graduate school’s official language (e.g. TOEFL or similar test, not for native speakers)
