The University of Duisburg-Essen offers within the
DFG-funded international Research Training Group 2098 (GRK 2098)
11 PhD positions (f/m) - E 13 TV-L, 65 %
2 MD/PhD positions (f/m) - E13 TV-L, 100 %
 
starting from October 1st, 2015.
 
The duration of the positions is initially limited up to September 30th, 2018. The salary is in accordance with the German public service salary scale, a New York allowance will be provided.
The pay grade classification depends on the personal and collective legal requirements.
 
The University of Duisburg-Essen in cooperation with Cornell University Medical College and Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, New York, welcomes applications for 11 PhD and 2 MD/ PhD for a three-year structured program in the field of the "Biomedicine of Sphingolipids" focusing on the role of the acid sphingomyelinase/acid ceramidase/sphingosine kinase system in signaling, tumor biology and treatment, inflammation and infectious biology as well as cardiovascular diseases. Focus is the translation of sphingolipid biology into pre-clinical and clinical projects.
Each thesis is organized as a joint project between groups in Essen and New York and an approximately one-year training with the groups in New York is an integral element of the GRK.

Essen: University of Duisburg-Essen: Institutes of Physiology, Pathophysiology, Molecular Biology, Immunology, Medical Microbiology, Center for Ophthalmology.
 
New York: Weill Cornell Medical College, Memorial-Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Mount Sinai School of Medicine
 
Potsdam: University of Potsdam: Institute of Nutritional Science
 
 
In the course of the newly established RTG excellent young academics from natural sciences or medicine will receive an outstanding education in the newly developing field of the Biomedicine of Sphingolipids.
The three-year structured program consists of lecture series, retreats, symposia, lab rotations, methods courses etc. (mandatory). In addition, participants will be offered the possibility to attend language courses and seminars.
Successful candidates will be awarded the PhD degree (Dr. rer. nat.).
The program is in English.

Requirements:
 
  • excellent graduation in the fields of biology, medicine, chemistry, medical biology,biochemistry or biotechnology (Master or equivalent)
  • proven interest in one or more of the above indicated research fields
  • highly motivated and committed
  • interested in participating actively in the program of the RTG
  • disposed to work with laboratory animals
  • very good written and spoken English skills
  • interest to perform a thesis in a truly international setting with studies in Essen and New York.
