Molecular dissection of early signaling response in the green alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii under the influence of biotic and abiotic factors

The green unicellular alga Chlamydomonas reinhardtii lives in soil and freshwater and has served as a model organism for a variety of biological processes for decades [1]. Its genome has been sequenced and there is a broad method toolkit available for this microalga. Here, we want to elucidate and compare early signal transduction steps that are triggered after C. reinhardtii is exposed to biotic factors such as the interaction with other microorganisms and abiotic factors such as light.

Former studies show that Ca2+ signaling relays information from the eyespot of the alga, which represents a primitive visual system, to the flagella, and calcium binding proteins have been identified in the flagella and eyespot subproteomes [2, 3]. Also kinases and phosphatases are present in these organelles and reversible phosphorylation can play an important role there [4, 5]. While several photoreceptors of C. reinhardtii are known that perceive light of different wavelengths [6, 7], knowledge about how these signaling components and mechanisms act to mediate early contact response in C. reinhardtii in the presence of other microrganisms remains elusive.
Here, we want to analyze early signaling steps based on reporter gene lines after triggering biotic and abiotic signaling cascades.

We expect:
  • a Master’s degree (or equivalent ) in Natural or Life Sciences. Research at ILRS is centred around “Microbial and Biomolecular Interactions”. Candidates about to earn their degree are welcome to apply.
