We seek to fill a DFG-funded position for a PhD student which will start January 2015. The aim of the project in which the candidate will participate is to obtain insights in membrane phase and permeability behavior of cells exposed to freezing and drying stress. The obtained insights will be used to develop preservation strategies for cells and tissues to be used in reproductive or regenerative medicine. The project will be performed in the Biomedical Process Technology group at the Leibniz Universität Hannover (Prof. Dr. Ir. Willem F. Wolkers), in close collaboration with the Unit for Reproductive Medicine at the University of Veterinary Medicine Hanover (Prof. Dr. med. vet. Harald Sieme).
The candidate is expected to participate in a highly motivated interdisciplinary small research group, which consists of biomedical engineers, biologists, biophysicists and veterinary scientists.
Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) studies are planned to study membrane phase and permeability behavior of sperm as well as other cell types during freezing and drying. In a later phase complementary Raman microspectroscopy studies are planned. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) will be used to study phase and glass transitions. In addition, studies with liposomes are planned used a model system to study effects of freezing and drying on membrane stability.
The preferred candidate should hold a master degree in biomedical engineering, biology, biophysics, or biochemistry. The candidate should enjoy working in an interdisciplinary laboratory environment, and able to work independently as well as part of a team. Experience in spectroscopic or thermal analysis techniques and programming in MATLAB is a plus. We offer an inspiring scientific environment and are integrated within REBIRTH ‘from Regenerative Biology to Regenerative Therapies’, the DFG-funded cluster of excellence in Hannover.
