Naturwissenschaftlicher Doktorand - Immunologie & Next Generation Sequencing (m/w)

The Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis, Department of Hematology, Pneumology and Oncology of the University Medical Center Mainz, laboratory of Dr. Markus Bosmann is seeking a highly qualified:
PhD candidate student in Immunology & Molecular Biology (m/f)
The University Medical Center Mainz of the Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz is ranked as a leading research institution of Germany having a strong immunology program. Our laboratory is affiliated to the Center for Thrombosis and Hemostasis (CTH), funded by the German Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as well as the Department of Hematology, Pneumology and Oncology. Objectives of the PhD program are to create an attractive environment for basic & translational research and improved career opportunities for young researchers.
We are looking for a highly motivated PhD candidate student to study the pathophysiology of experimental sepsis using surgical in vivo models of disease. The project aims to investigate the molecular interactions of novel immune signaling pathways (MAVS, MDA5, RIG-I) and the coagulation systems. A special area of interest is the role of macrophages and megakaryocytes during septic coagulopathy. It is planned to profile the transcriptome using next generation sequencing during the natural course of sepsis in transgenic mice.
The research project is primarily conducted using the cecal ligation & puncture model of sepsis, and requires state-of-the-art techniques in immunology, molecular biology and hemostaseology. Next generation technologies will be used in collaboration with existing core facilities and biostatistic platforms. Complex mouse breeding strategies and generation of bone-marrow chimeric mice will be performed. In addition, cell culture techniques (isolation of macrophages, megakaryocytes, platelets) as well as flow cytometry, RT-PCR, ChIP assays, ELISA, Western blotting, bead-based assays, aggregometry, CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing, immunostainings and intra-vital microscopy will be employed.
The PhD student will have opportunities in designing as well as conducting independent projects. The duration of the project will be 3-4 years. Based on individual credentials and experience, an application for extramural PhD stipends is encouraged.
An M.Sc. or diploma degree in a relevant field is required and a strong background in Immunology, Molecular Biology and/or Hemostaseology is preferred. Ability in initiating, conducting, evaluating and reporting of research studies is essential. Experiences with tissue cultures, transgenic mouse models and molecular biology methodologies are desirable. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
The PhD student will have the opportunity to work with an interdisciplinary and highly motivated team of scientists and clinicians. Further information is available:
