The new Otto Hahn Group "Precision Infrared Spectroscopy on Small Molecules" at the Max Planck Institute for Biophysical Chemistry is currently looking for a

Ph.D. Student (f/m)

to join the project. Our research is focused on pushing the limits of high precision spectroscopy on molecules. Using frequency comb technology together with a Stark decelerator to slow the molecules, we hope to reduce the measured linewidth of mid-infrared transitions to well below 1 kHz and hopefully to the limit given by the natural linewidth (ca. 1-10 Hz). This experiment can potentially set new upper limits on a potential time variation of the electron-proton mass ratio.
 
Candidates should hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in physics or chemistry.
 
The successful applicant will receive a salary according to the funding guidelines for young researchers of the Max Planck Society. Alternatively, if greater flexibility is required, a Max Planck PhD scholarship can also be granted.
