Work environment: We are an international laboratory for translational matrix biology with up to 25 researchers. We are closely linked to other research facilities in Erlangen (Dep. of Rheumatology and Immunology, Dep. of Animal Physiology, and Interdisciplinary Center for Clinical Research). We have national and international cooperation partners in academics and industry. Our major gaols are to identify novel anti-fibrotic targets, elucidate the underlying pathogenic pathways and come up with candidate therapies for clinical use. We are focusing autoimmune diseases associated with skin and lung fibrosis.
Topic: The student’s project will focus on a specific posttranslational sugar modification that occurs on numerous proteins and its role in the pathogenesis of bone diseases. This modification has been shown to have profound effects on protein stability, enzymatic functions and protein-protein interactions, in part by regulating other posttranslational modifications. Of note, the enzymes catalysing this modification are accessible to genetic and pharmacologic modulation and those tools are established in the laboratory.
Methods: We offer a broad spectrum of molecular techniques to analyze matrix metabolism. The student will work with immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, qPCR, ELISA, WB, nucleofection, siRNA, reporter assay, ChIP assay among other methods. The student’s project will comprise various in vitro (cell culture) and in vivo systems (genetic and non-genetic mouse models).
Requirements and application: We invite applications by students holding a master's or comparable degree in biological or biomedical sciences (biology, molecular biology, immunology, biochemistry). We appreciate applications from highly motivated students with basic knowledge in the above-mentioned techniques. Previous work with in vivo models is desirable but not necessary. Organizational and communication skills as well as the ability to work independently but also in a team are very welcomed. Good English and or German skills are essential to work within our laboratory. Funding for a 3-year employment is available.
