PhD poition in DFG-funded Research Training Group GRK1739

The University of Duisburg-Essen is one of the youngest universities in Germany and thinks in terms of possibilities, not limitations. In the heart of the Ruhrregion, we develop ideas of the future at our 11 faculties. We are strong in research and teaching, live diversity, support potential and are highly committed to an educational equality that has earned this name.
The University of Duisburg-Essen offers within the
DFG-funded Research Training Group 1739 (GRK1739)
1 PhD position (f/m)
 (salary according TV-L E13 65%)
The GRK1739 “Molecular determinants of the cellular radiation response and their potential for response modulation” offers outstanding interdisciplinary scientific training and research opportunities for graduates of life sciences and medicine with interest in basic and translational research. Actually we offer 1 PhD position focussing on the eradication of clonogenic tumor cells. Ionizing radiation induced cell inactivation involves apoptosis, necrosis, mitotic catastrophe, senescence and autophagy. A complex network of survival and death pathways controls cell-fate decisions downstream of the critical insult, and this network can be exploited for a modulation of radiation responses. The impact of individual tumor cell-specific changes on the cell death mode and on the efficacy of ionizing radiation will be studied in vitro and in vivo in relevant models reflecting tumor heterogeneity by using appropriate end-points. In the project  different aspects are investigated using genetic, biochemical and pharmacologic approaches to analyze the connected role of the protein kinase B/AKT pathway in the cross-talk between radiation-induced DNA damage and membrane damage, DNA repair, and cell fate upon irradiation.
