Within the medical section, the
 
International Research Training Group 1911 “Immunoregulation of Inflammation in Allergy and Infection“
 
funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) offers a structured international 3-year doctoral program. The program is organized by the University of Lübeck, the Leibniz Research Center Borstel, the University of Cincinnati and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital and promotes systematic research cooperation between the German and the US institutions allowing expeditious research-related qualification of doctoral researchers.
 
The major goal is to provide an international network of training and research centered around projects that aim at identifying novel pathways that initiate, maintain and resolve chronic infectious and allergic diseases. The research program is supplemented by a structured qualification and cross-border supervisory concept with defined training modules integrating student exchanges between the German and the US partner institutions. The qualification concept comprises an IRTG-specific seminar that integrates visiting researchers, jointly held courses, a yearly retreat, an international symposium and individualized educational as well as mentoring programs. This framework is designed to convey skills to the doctoral researchers that qualify for the domestic and the international job market within a period of three years.
 
The IRTG is now seeking an excellent candidate to staff the PhD position in the project 
 
B2 - The role of C5a-mediated cross-talk between natural killer cells and dendritic cells in Toxoplasma gondii infection.
 
We are focusing in this project on the influence of the complement component C5a on natural killer cell function and the involvement of C5a and its receptors in the cross-talk of NK cells with dendritic cells and T cells using in vitro and in vivo approaches (e.g. Toxoplasma gondii infection models; for further informations refer to Fusakio et al. 2011 JI; Aliberti 2005 Nat Immunol Rev). The position will be located in the Institute for Systemic Inflammation Research (ISEF, www.isef.uni-luebeck.de). The ISEF focuses on the role of the complement system in acute and chronic inflammatory diseases of the lung, the skin and the gastrointestinal tract.
 
We are looking for highly motivated and qualified candidates with strong interest and background in immunology. Requirements include a master degree (or equivalent) with excellent grades in biology, biochemistry or related sciences. Solid command of the English language is essential.
 
The position will be paid according to the regulations of the civil service collective wage agreement (PhD: TV‐L 65% of level E13). Applications of women are strongly encouraged. Handicapped candidates with equivalent qualifications will be given preference
