The Philipps-Universität Marburg and the Max-Planck Institute for Terrestrial Microbiology have recently established the LOEWE-Center for Synthetic Microbiology, SYNMIKRO. Supported by the state of Hessen within its excellence program LOEWE, the more than 30 research groups of SYNMIKRO focus on basic aspects of synthetic biology on all levels of microbial function, ranging from the development of regulatory circuits, genetic codes and metabolic pathways to the synthesis of new minimal cells and microbial communities. The research group “Cellular Circuits” (Dr. Kristina Jonas) invites applications for a

PhD position

Salary and benefits are according to a public service position in Germany (TV-H E 13, 50 %). The position is to be staffed as soon as possible temporarily for a period of 3 years and will offer the possibility of further scientific qualification in the frame of the assigned duties.

Scientific services belong to the duties in research and teaching, particularly the cooperation in the AG Cellular Circuits. The research group studies the general design principles of regulatory circuits that allow cells to process information and to regulate their own behavior. The offered project will focus on the dissection of regulatory pathways that control the bacterial cell cycle, using the asymmetrically dividing bacterium Caulobacter crescentus as a model system. A primary goal is to understand how cell cycle progression and bacterial growth are modulated in response to changing environmental conditions. Multidisciplinary approaches, including genetics, biochemistry as well as modern imaging techniques, next generation sequencing and proteomics approaches will be used.

We are seeking highly motivated candidates with a diploma/master´s degree in biology, biochemistry or related fields. Applicants should have experience with routine molecular biology techniques and a keen interest in fundamental research questions. Additional experience in bacterial genetics, fluorescence microscopy or protein biochemistry is beneficial but not required. The ability to carry out research projects independently and very good English skills are expected. We offer research training in a dynamic and young team embedded in a collaborative scientific environment that is equipped with state-of-the-art technologies. Please visit http://www.synmikro.com/jonas for further information.
Informal inquiries can be directed to Dr. Kristina Jonas (kristina.jonas@synmikro.uni-marburg.de).

We support women and particularly invite them to apply. Applicants with children are welcome - the Philipps-Universität is certified as a family friendly university. A reduction of working time is possible. Applicants with a disability as described in SGB IX (§2 Abs. 2, 3) will be preferred in case of equal qualifications.
As the documents will not be returned after the end of the selection procedure, please do not send originals.
